Index Wall Summary + Strategies
Current Popularity: Low
Type: In & Out
Index Wall is a short and sweet hike up to a 180-degree southern veiw. This area is mostly used by climbers for practice. Although, I'm not climber, so I always go for the trail of course. The trail is constantly going upwards, though it's very short, at only 5.1 kilometres. The gain is quite high for the low distance at 380 metres. The terrain at times can require hands to maneuver, although, there is nothing above a class one. The terrain could still could be difficult for beginners. The path is very clear, with just a few splits at points, with signs marking which way to go.
Once you reach the dried out stream (if you came during spring it may be a flowing stream!), go up the stream rather than following the path. This route is much shorter and easier terrain-wise. The view at the top is a lovely 180 degree view to the south.
I always consider this hike as something to do if you just want to get outside since it's very short, while still being pretty steep. It can take only 2.5 hours if you go at a decent pace. Although, on my scale it's still on beginner due to how short it is, along with how easy the terrain is compared to other day hikes.
