Both Colchuck and Stuart Lake are alpine lakes located in The Enchantments. Colchuck is undoubtedly the most beautiful lake, therefore making it much more popular. As with any hike in The Enchantments, this hike is extremely popular, so avoid going on weekends. I went on a Monday, and there were still about 30 cars in the parking lot. This hike is on the Enchantments Through Hike, which is the main trail that goes through the enchantments. That hike is so popular that they restrict the amount of people who can camp on it.
To get to the trailhead, you will have to drive on a gravel road for several kilometres. Make sure you drive to the end of the gravel road, since the other parking lots are for different hikes.
Colchuck and Stuart Lakes Parking Lot
The trail is decently long at 20 kilometres. Although, its ascent is only 850 metres. The terrain is above average difficulty for class 1 terrain, giving it a 6.8 out of 10 on my scale. You also won’t have to do any path finding.
To hike is very easy up to the split between Colchuck and Lake Stuart. You can go to which ever one you want too first. Head to the right path for Lake Stuart and the left path for Colchuck Lake.
I decided to head to Colchuck Lake first. This lake has a very light-blue colour to it. It’s very popular for people to do just this hike and not go to Lake Stuart. I would definitely say this lake is more impressive than Stuart.
Colchuck Lake during Fall
I then walked back to the split in the trail and went to Lake Stuart. This lake had very little colour, but it was still very pretty. If you are running out of time I would recommend to skip this lake over Colchuck.
Lake Stuart during Fall
Both of these lakes are very beautiful alpine lakes located in the Alpine Lake Wilderness, inside of The Enchantments. They're surprisingly popular considering they're not the prettiest nor easiest to get to alpine lakes in the state.
